Nowadays, the automatic collection of environmental data and their availability in real time is fundamental for controlling the territory and for understanding climate change and extreme events. At a time when drought and intense rainfall events are becoming more frequent, information on water resources plays a key role.
In this article, we will explore the use of LSI LASTEM instrumentation and how it contributes to providing real-time and continuous data for the monitoring and analysis of water balances of the Civil Protection Functional Center of the Lazio Region. In particular, the data of the piezometric sensors supplied by LSI LASTEM to the Municipal Environment Agency (AMA) of Rome, for the measurement of the groundwater level inside the wells, are automatically merged into the Region’s Polaris portal.
The piezometric network of AMA
LSI LASTEM instrumented ten piezometric stations distributed in three AMA plants for the measurement of the piezometric level. This data is essential to understand hydrogeological phenomena and evaluate the trend of aquifers near the plants.
Civil Protection and the importance of real-time data
The institution responsible for analysing the collected piezometric data is the Civil Protection Functional Center of the Lazio Region. It plays a key role in the constant monitoring and analysis of water balances in the area. The network monitored by the Civil Protection is currently made up of around 150 instrumented wells, in addition to the manual measurements communicated periodically by the operators of the uninstrumented wells. The data being analysed are made available through the new Polaris platform, which allows the visualization and download of network data, acquired continuously from the stations located in the Region.
Data interoperability: the strength of LSI LASTEM
LSI LASTEM, in addition to the piezometric sensors, supplied AMA with the innovative data logger Alpha Log for data recording and sending them to Enviro-Cube. The platform, thanks to its cloud-based nature, allows easy access and easy consultation of data from any internet location.
LSI LASTEM solutions are also designed to be open to integration with third-party systems. Thanks to this feature, the collected data can be easily integrated into other third-party systems and platforms. In fact, using Enviro-Cube, it was possible to integrate the data of the piezometric stations inside the Polaris portal of the Lazio Region, through an automatic tool that converts them into a compatible format.
Ensuring Institutions, such as the Civil Protection, real-time and continuous access to data is essential to allow a rapid and effective response, guaranteeing maximum protection of the territory. Thanks to this timely information, the possibility opens to significantly improve the environmental protection and safety of the communities involved.
